Talent, not money, is the biggest constraint facing companies who want to make the most of their data. Most organisations already have huge amounts of data, and an Accenture survey published in 2015 showed 73% of companies are spending more than 20% of their overall technology budget on big data analytics. Even given these resources, many are still unable to use it effectively to drive their decisions. As Experian concluded last summer, most companies are: ‘drowning in data, but starving for insights.’

How should you solve the talent constraint? At ASI Data Science, we think we’ve cracked the problem. Since 2014, we have run Europe’s leading programme for top quantitative PhDs, postdocs and software engineers to transition to data science. This is an eight week bootcamp where Fellows work directly with sponsoring companies, on real data science projects. For companies, this offers an outstanding opportunity to undertake an exploratory data science project at low risk. Then, after seeing the Fellow in a real world environment, they can choose whether to make the Fellow a job offer. It’s the perfect hiring pipeline for some of the world’s most talented people.

This January marks our seventh ASI Fellowship. Our fellows have completed over 100 projects with firms ranging from seed-stage startups to large multinationals. The ASI Fellowship programme is unique in many ways. Almost 10% of the UK’s STEM subject PhDs apply to join our programme every year, which is remarkable! The quality of talent is exceptional - getting a place is highly competitive and only 1 in 10 qualified applicants will get an offer. And all of this costs less than a typical recruiter’s fee for hiring a data scientist.
